Blower Door Test - Tahoma, Park City, UTBaker Street Properties is committed to developing projects that save energy, reduce pollution, provide healthier indoor air, reduce water usage, preserve natural resources, improve durability and reduce maintenance for the owner and occupant.
According to the US Energy Information Administration, in 2005, the built environment in the United State was responsible for 39% of all energy related carbon dioxide emissions, more than the transportation sector (33%) and the industrial sector (28%). This means that our homes, offices and retail centers were responsible for emitting more carbon dioxide than all the cars and trucks on the road combined.
Despite the recent press coverage regarding the importance of increasing the gas mileage for new cars, it is actually more effective and easier to improve the energy efficiency of our built environment. The technology to reduce our energy consumption in the home is available today and is relatively inexpensive to implement. Simple changes like replacing light bulbs and purchasing energy star appliances can have a dramatic effect.
When a developer has the opportunity to incorporate energy saving features into the construction of a new home, the energy savings can be substantial. For example, at Tahoma we improved our insulation, installed high efficiency heating and cooling systems, chose energy star appliances and selected low wattage lighting fixtures: these simple improvements brought down the estimated energy usage of each home by an average of 47% over that of a standard new construction home.
